Graduation in C'ville

My time as a University of Virginia student has come and gone. Graduation took place on Sunday morning, lasting until mid-afternoon. What a wonderful celebration and special time to be with family and best friends. 




We have had 4 wonderful years together. Learned so much, laughed so much, and together grew as individuals through our friendships. I can truly say I met my best friends here at UVA! 




They have become my second family and have helped create Charlottesville to be my second home. So much so that I am staying! I am onto the next chapter in my life.... a month working in Greece, a job with Easton Events and Pippin Hill Vineyards, a fellowship through my Church downtown, and another year in C'ville. 




To all my graduating friends... congrats!

Spotlight: Peter Waldman

As an Architectural History major I have been trying to find a way to integrate some of my experiences with the UVa school of Architecture into the blog! We are SO lucky to have such wonderful professors within the school and I have had great opportunities getting to take class by such elite men and woman in the field of Architecture and Architectural History. My goal is to spotlight one of my professors each week or every other and share some special stories and insight on these Charlottesville residents who spend their time working with students at UVa as well as doing their own personal research and studies outside of the classroom. 

So here we go.... Spotlighting: Peter Waldman! 


Professor Waldman first studied architecture at Princeton University from 1961-1969. Growing up in New York City gave him the eye for adventure thus leading him into the Peace Corps after his time at Princeton. Walman was stationed in Arequipa, Peru... how cool is that? 

Peter Waldman served his apprenticeship under Richard Meier for a short while and then spent most of time with Michael Graves... why do I always think about his Target line when I hear his name?!? 

Before coming to The University of Virginia, Professor Waldman taught at Princeton and Rice. Thankfully for the Charlottesville community, Peter Walman is now permenently grounded in this area! 

Professor Waldman is widly known and recognized for his architectural sucess. In 1996 he recieved the ACSA Distinguished Progessor Award. In 2002 Waldman was awared the All-University Outstanding Teaching Award... woah are we lucky or what?! And I have only mentioned a few.... this teacher rocks! 

My personal experience with Professor Waldman was within the setting of Architecture 101: Lessons on the Lawn. As a scared and architecturally speaking unprepared first year I was overwhelmed and quite confused on the first day of class when Waldman handed me a dried chili pepper and pistachio and told me to relate these objects to my life in the form of lines and dots.... take a stab at that one! But as the semester went on I leared so much about the world of design. 

This past fall I had the opportunity to re-take the class as a teaching assistant and help the first years transition into the world of architecture. I had a group of seven first years and together we explored and worked together to understand the meaning of the class! 

Near the end of the semester, Peter Waldman, takes his class out to his home, Parcel X... the home that he designed and constructed in the Charlottesville landscape. Professor Waldman describes the site as a Satyric campsite in North Garden, Virginia. What a project! Rumor has it his wife made him build another house located close by that was designed by more normal standards. I think this one would be pretty fun to live in, but you decide!

After wandering around the outskirts of Parcel X, we had the opportunity to walk inside the home and snap some photos. I loved the eclectic collection of books, paintings, stuffed animals, and other odds and ends. The kitchen is very unique to contemporary kitchen design. Everything is exposed, while it may appear cluttered and unorganized, the kitchen was amazing... very fun to walk though and look around! 


Really loving the way art is displayed on these concrete walls. I have always been a fan of simple sketches with a splash of color. Also the simplicity of mat and frame work well when numerous pictures are hung so close together!


Just a little piece of architecture studio sitting on a table. Waldman works to bring all his passions into Parcel X, from big architectural moves to little pieces of trace paper and chipboard. 


Just another example of all his little odds and ends....fun, right?! If you look closely you can see that the table is made of a map of Texas. I wonder if the laser cutter was used to make the imprint on the wood?


Professor Waldman has two daughers and guessing by this Dr. Seus pillow case he didn't want they to grow up too fast! On the bottom floor there are two twin beds, one for each girl. I really liked this pillow and thought it was a great addition to all the crazy things in his home.


The master bedroom is lofted onto a second floor by a set of skinny stairs. This is the only space not located on the ground level! From this ' perch' Waldman can look down upon the whole structure and see whats happening within his home! 


There is so much more I could write about Professor Waldman and I encourage all of my readers to take a look at his page on the UVa Architecture website. 

In March of 2010, Peter Waldman was named a favorite professor in the Declaration, an independent UVa newpaper. In this issue one wrote, "Every word from his mouth breaks you open like a revelation, while his sometimes smarmy quips overcome your tendency to take things too seriously. He can make you appreciate architecture like no other". 

So there you go! Professor Waldman is not one to miss out on meeting! He has done so much for the Charlottesville community and we are SO very grateful.

Playing on Grounds!

After having such a wonderful C'ville weekend, I wanted to share some fun photos with you guys.  I spent the weekend babysitting for a family of three... my favorite family of three! Despite my early morning wake up due to two mornings of 6:30 pancakes ( wondering about the early post??) I had such a great time spending the weekend acting like a kid. From homemade sprinkle cookies to being the bad guy on the pirate ship these guys make me smile 100% of the time! 

When Sunday afternoon hit, it was time for an outing! I decided to pile everyone into the car and head to the Lawn. We packed up the baseball bats, bases, and ball and threw in a football as well. Virginia and I were going to let those boys run wild. 


What a great place to run around and be wild. With all that open space and beautiful architecture it's just what Thomas Jefferson planned for!



The boys and I played a game of baseball while my friend Kate helped with baby Virginia. Lets just say the boys may have pretty much dominated the game... I need to work on my batting skills before we head back to the Lawn again. 


Between relay races up and down the Lawn and a few home runs, Virginia was able to make her way into the action... and the mud! 



On our way to Bodos the boys stopped to climb some trees. They begged to stay and climb, but I told them that would be a later adventure around UVa grounds!


We just had the best time! If you every have a free hour or two, babysitting or not, head over to the Lawn with a baseball or football. It's the perfect place around town to play!

Lighting Of The Lawn

Wow... what an amazing night for the University of Virginia. With the annual Lighting of the Lawn celebrations hundreds of students gathered together in anticipation of the countdown for the grand illumination of the academical village! Students and local Charlottesville residents came to UVa looking for some extra holiday spirit and entertainment. After several group of singers performed and the ever so popular poem was read "all the Hoos down in Hooville" were ready for their school to be lit and festive for the holiday ahead! 


Lawn residents hosted gatherings for a variety of school organizations and hot chocolate and s'mores were offered for all!

What a show! If you are a local C'ville residents and missed the grand illumination, no need to fear, the academical village will be lit up for the holiday season. Take time to visit the Lawn and soak up Thomas Jefferson's architectural masterpiece with a wonderful holiday spin!

Spaces around UVA

The University of Virginia has the most beautiful campus. Not only do we have Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village, but there are many other spaces around grounds where students can read, chat, and play. And that is just what I did yesterday with my group of Architecture 101 students... PLAY! 



As a review for their final exam, the other Teaching Assistants and I decided to play a game of charades... architecture style! Since it was such a wonderful C'ville day, we wanted to take our students outside for class to enjoy the weather, falling leaves, and crisp air. As an extra special treat Brian brought his new tinnie tiny puppy to play. 


Each students took time to write their own ideas on slips of paper and than one by one they stood in front of the group while acting out their building, style, or architectural theme which we have discussed this past semester. We all had the best time... laughing, learning, and spending time together in the beauty of Charlottesville. 



I encourage my readers to explore the grounds around the University of Virginia. There are numerous spaces where one can submerge themselves and get lost in the beauty of the landscape. Take the time to read, write, or even PLAY!

Veterans Day in C'ville

November 11th 2010.... Happy Veterans Day to all of my readers! This official American holiday was first declared by President Woodrow Wilson in November of 1919 when he stated: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

Today, around the University of Virginia grounds, flags were placed around the Lawn to commemorate those who have served and fought for the United States armed forces. Several ROTC students tabled on the Lawn in uniform to remind students of the significance of the day and its importance! 



I encourage you to thank your friends and relatives who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces... I know I have a call to make!
